Ztravelbug Returns to the Past
Naem-Do Performing Arts Center
MARCH 8~9
Ztravelbug will be hosting a trip to the Naem-Do Performing Arts Center. Those interested in traditional music and dance will be given the opportunity to learn and participate and be part of a historical legacy that very few people witness during their visit to Korea. The locale itself is filled with an abundance of cultural assets and we will do our best to immerse you in the splendor of this area and give you the chance to live and breathe Korea as it once was.
Jindo Island is an island in South Jeolla province, South Korea. It lies just off the southwest corner of the Korean peninsula. It is separated from the mainland by the Myeongnyang Strait; however, this strait is now spanned by South Korea's longest suspension bridge, the Jindo Bridge. The island makes up the great majority of Jindo County. The Korea Jindo Dog is native to this island.
Mysterious Sea Road
the World-famous mysterious sea road is a phenomenon exposed 2.8km-long sea way between Hoedong-ri, Gogun-myeon and Modo-ri, Uisin-myeon when water is lowered because of the difference of tidal. However it is still mysterious in its regular width of about 40m in the water. The tides come in and out two times a day. Though there are the differences of tide's speed and wave due to Typhoon, this sea path is still formed.
Jindo Grand Bridge
this is a cable stayed bridge of length 484m and width 11.7m. It was constructed on October 18, 1984 and has been in the spotlight as a tourist attraction. Especially, the sunset and night view is beautiful, and the current of water at Uldolmok under the bridge is spectacular. This Uldolmok is well known as the place of Myeongrangdaecheop, one of three navel battles of Admiral Yi Sun Shin. As an important point of the West Sea, it forms a narrow strait, which is around 294m, as same as the width of Han River.
Culture and Art
Jindo has been a precious reservoir of traditional folklore and a town of art which produced brilliant poetry, writings, paintings and music. Jindo once was called Okju ('fertile town') because of its outstanding natural beauty, fertile soil, clear sea, and kind people. Its remarkable folklore may be attributable to a wonderful harmony of local native culture and the high culture of those who were exiled to Jindo.
On Jindo there are 4 Major Intangible Cultural Properties: Ssitgim-gut (a shamanistic ritual, consoling the souls of the dead) which received the Gold Prize at the World Folklore Festival in 1979, Ganggangsuwollae (a form of circle dance), Namdo Deullorae (Field working song) (songs people sing while working in the field), and Tasiraegi. There are also 3 other Intangible Cultural Properties: Buknori (drum performance), Manga (songs of consolation sung at burial ceremonies), and Jindo Hongju (a local alcoholic drink). All these cultural properties are well preserved and have been passed down in their original shapes and forms.
