Full-length cartoons go a long way from the script to the final release in cinemas. And My little Pony the Movie also went this way.
We will show you several old concept arts with different locations.
That is one of the original concept pieces of the characters that would become Tempest and the Storm King. In the original script, Tempest was an alicorn named Cosmos, and was the long-lost brother of the Princesses. His goal was to steal the magic of the Princesses and use it through the Staff to summon the Storm King, in this script a powerful elemental monster that he would use to conquer Equestria. But it turns out the Storm King is too powerful for him to control and tries to destroy everything, forcing Cosmos to reform and help the ponies defeat it.
There were other significant changes too. Verko was supposed to play a larger role, Capper was named “Mendax” and was a fox with a scorpion tail, Captain Celaeno was “Madame Harpy” and she and her pirates were supposed to stay evil, there was a bog of mud troll monsters the ponies befriend that help them get to Mount Aris, the hippogriffs were supposed to bring their army to the final battle at Canterlot, and the ponies would’ve gotten new magic powers through the staff to beat the Storm King.
The script went through a number of revisions, both during its time when distribution was in Fox’s hands (when they wanted to scrap the script entirely and make a “cartoons-go-to-the-real-world” movie like the Smurfs films) and after Hasbro switched over to Lionsgate.
Here are all "location" concept arts in order:
